Roof gardens
The idea of reclaiming the lost green in urban areas is more and more spread; we cannot and must not abandon the natural aspect but we have to fit it in our contemporary vital rhythm. Giordani’s Studio team with their projects of roof gardens, combine urban life and nature, looking back to the past along an itinerary of research and planning in order to create spaces and surroundings where the relationship between nature and architecture is given by harmony.
The employment of continuous covering to obtain green spaces brings with it great benefits for the environment, thanks to the improvement of the microclimate of towns ,for our psychophysical wellbeing and therefore for the quality of life. But it also determines some unquestionable constructional and economical advantages.
Environmental and psychophysical benefits:
roof gardens, thanks to their outstanding capacity of accumulating , keeping and giving back water slowly to the environment, regulate the” water cycle” allowing a continuous drainage

also the phenomenon of overheating of towns is mitigated allowing a considerable improvement of urban temperature

a green roof with only a 15 cm thickness of substratum also reduces acoustic and electromagnetic pollution

a roof garden helps us to safeguard the biodiversity which must be an unquestionable priority for everyone

it is known how the contact with the earth and the care of plants is an important anti-stress activity for our psychophysical wellbeing; for disabled people, the blind, those who suffer from Alzheimer disease or have any other health problem, the possibility of walking and living in contact with nature enjoying its various nuances is an important rehabilitative therapy.
Officinal plants, vegetables, flowers and fruit offer a variety of sensory stimulations, an energy source which can positively affect us. It is necessary to recreate some green spaces on cement surfaces such as roofs of commercial and industrial centres, schools, hospitals, garages…or on terraces and balconies and any other waterproof surfaces thus returning to nature what has been taken from it.
Economical and constructive advantages:
roof gardens determine a notable increase of the buildings value creating more comfortable houses which are also aesthetically pleasant and with more enjoyable surfaces

they allow us to save the energy necessary both for heating and cooling

they contribute to improve the output of photovoltaic panels

they increase the duration of the waterproofing material thanks to a notable reduction of thermic excursion
Types

According to your needs and situation, roof gardens can be made in an intensive or extensive way.

When we talk about intensive green, we refer to a type of green whose aim is to create a pleasant and enjoyable garden every time and every season where you can have designs, perspectives and scenes like in a common ground “0” garden.

Extensive green is a mere roof covering where you can use sedum, herbaceous perennials and small shrubs
